The new STAR TREK flick was okay, but it didn't send me.

FLAME ON.

(Best performance: Karl Urban as McCoy.)

Huh? Urban didn't really get the Southern accent right, and he seemed more like a hypochindriac than a luddite curmudgeon.

Kirk and Spock were the appropriate mix of dickish and awesome.

They actual gave Uhura a *personality.*

For me, 'twas awesome.

My sister-in-law liked it, but she comes from a movie fan standpoint, not a Trek fan standpoint.

I'm giving it a lot of extra room to dodge critique because of how they framed it. Nothing terrifyingly original, but nothing particularly offensive, either. Maybe I wasn't expecting enough from it to be disappointed.

One of my biggest complaints is that I think the look and sound of it will date it awfully quickly. Too much present/not enough future, not to mention too much magic/not enough science.

I have to agree with you on best performance, though. I think it was because he actually *sounded* like Dee Kelley in ways that went well beyond the accent.

Jesus God, I am so glad to hear someone else say that. I've been terribly depressed over the fact that EVERYBODY ELSE IN THE ENTIRE WORLD thinks it's the second coming while I was just going "okay, another action scene, another action scene, another humor scene, another action/humor scene, IS SOMEONE GOING TO GIVE ME A REASON TO GIVE A SHIT ABOUT THESE PEOPLE AT SOME POINT?" Sigh. I feel like I was wrong to expect anything besides explosions and giggles. Apparently that has fucked me up.

See the review haiku! Longer answer: I went into it with the expectations that it'd be absolute shite, and it wasn't, so I was pleasantly surprised. It wasn't great; at best it was sorta OK, but man, Hugh Jackman spent some time in the gym, huh?
