Vorkosigan heart

Ivan? Hmm, I see some similarities in circumstance, but I think that personality-wise, Kirk is still waaaaay more Miles ;)

To me, Ivan has always been the epitome of the guy who just wants to have a normal life. Sure, a leeeetle excitement is acceptable, but he's just an innocent bystander.

Things happen to Ivan because he's standing next to Miles. Things happen to Jim Kirk and Miles Vorkosigan because they are TROUBLE MAGNETS :D

Star Trek; reboot Kirk&Spock--elessar83

This.

(And they're both control freaks smart men who invariably use charm and wit, and occasionally force, to manipulate the situation to their best advantage). (Though one could argue that Miles is a tad more successful than Jim Kirk, given that Miles ends up with an entire mercenary company where Jim gains control of a single solitary (albeit very big and important) ship, but that would be unkind and also possibly indicative of bias).

NewKirk *wishes* he could be Miles. Actually, no. *NewSpock* wishes NewKirk could be Miles.

Yes, crazy bad stuff would happen, but at least Miles usually acknowledges when things go all to hell. (This does not stop him from making them even worse, of course.)

Having yet to see the Ultimate Trek movie....

Nu!Kirk seems a little too smug-bastardish in fanfic. I've always thought of Ivan as clueless himbo. (of course, I also liked Cordelia's idea that he's been playing dumb his whole life to stay out of the target/make sure Miles has a way to shine too.)

Do you mean Ivan Vorpatril or Miles Vorkosigan?
iRead

Ivan never went out of his way to engage in bar fights and cheat on examinations, surely. I always saw him as the type of person who went with the flow and didn't worry much about things (unless he was stuck with Miles and/or about to die, which is kinda synonymous) whereas Kirk is a rebel with a lot to prove. They both shagged their way through school into adulthood, though.

Party guy, outgoing, social, versus the guy who's manipulative but horrible about how he is with people.

Star Trek by Echo

So do you mean the characterization of Movie!New!Kirk vs. Fanon!New!Kirk? Otherwise I don't quite get the comparison: in the movie Kirk wasn't horrible about people, other than with Spock, I thought. To party all night and attract chicks you can't be *that* much of a bastard (spoken from the perspective of a chick).

Ivan doesn't want to be a captain, whereas Kirk seems to treasure power. Ivan would hide behind Spock (or Miles) and say "Pick him first!"

This is true. OTOH, if there were no danger in it, Ivan would greatly appreciate a commission. It would help him get chicks.

Certainly if Ivan were writing self-insert fanfiction that would be what he'd write himself as! But I am not sure that it's quite the same thing.

I dunno. I think it's the perky!pretty!enthusiastic-but-dumb Kirk that's popping up in a lot of the fanfic that's getting to me. Probably because it's starting to explain to me why the new Trek doesn't work for me as well as it does for most people: Chris Pine is a terrific actor, but I have a quiet, visceral dislike of this new Kirk, whereas, as someone (possibly you) observed, fandom loves assholes.

Some Kirk/Spock is almost like reading Tim/Kon, in DCU. Except Kon's the one in the captain's chair. And those kinds of characters can amuse me, but they're not the ones I like to have front and center.

Hm. Depends on the fanfic.

In most cases he seems more like if you put Miles and Ivan in a blender and took out Miles' body issues.
