remember the squirrels? I got that beat

Last night, I heard a strange, plainitive sound. It kept going on and on, so I went out to see what was up. A kitten was mewing outside my window. Good mew. I'm on the second floor.

The kitten is quite young, and looks a little sick -- watery eyes. I tried to wrangle it, the better for vet-taking, but it fled. I left it some tuna and decided to try again in the morning.

Well, I just found it again. It was under my car.

When I got down beside my car to coax it out, it climbed into the engine compartment.

The hood of my car is now up, and occasional mews emerge from the engine. I will try to coax the cat out, or failing that, take pictures of it in there.

UPDATE: Left kitten for a while, then went out to check. Kitten is not under my car, or, apparently, in my engine. Not in its other hiding spot, as far as I can tell. Probably taken inside by somebody. If it's still out and about, I expect to hear it mewing later tonight.

UPDATE 2: Spoke too soon. Honked horn; no response. Lifted hood again: saw kitten in bowels of engine compartment. No hose, of course, so I dumped most of a glass of water on it, to try to nudge it out. Now I have a wet kitten glaring at me from a point even deeper inside my engine. Attempts to take pictures have failed, mainly because there are lots of hoses and things in the way.

UPDATE 3: Operation Kitty Extraction continues poorly.

I did, however, get a picture.

UPDATE 4/ANNOUNCEMENT: It's time for an EngineKitty LOLcat contest! Best EngineKitty LOLcat caption for the photo above wins a book from my library, to be determined. (I am thinking about H. Beam Piper's LITTLE FUZZY, which seems fitting, but I will have to check to see if I have a spare copy of that first.)

HAVE AT IT, people. CAPTION CONTEST IS NOW CLOSED. Entries are now being tabulated!

Thanks to everybody for helpful suggestions. OK, none of them worked, but the *thought* totally counts, and it wasn't like I was having any luck. The solution, if you are ever in a similar situation: wait for the cat to get bored. And annoyed with humans who keep opening the hood and poking things inside and taking its picture and asking it why it's doing this, huh? EngineKitty snuck into a convenient flowerbed between extrication attempts. I last saw it sneaking around the back of the complex, no doubt looking for something else to break into.

UPDATE 6: oh crap. I just heard a mew outside my window.

sledge hammer!

EngineKitty LOLcat contest: IT IS ON

For those just joining us, there is a kitten in my car engine. Fortunately, I have no work today, but this puts a crimp in my errand-running, and I have no idea how I'm getting over to hjcallipygian's for dinner tonight. But my loss can be your gain! A book from my library (possibly H. Beam Piper's LITTLE FUZZY) to the best LOLcat caption for EngineKitty.

To enter, go here and leave your caption in comments. Feel free to borrow and manipulate yon image for the contest!
