APED: "down, down, down"

April 29th, 2009 (08:27 pm)

It's down by the docks
where the water rolls by
That you'll see the tall ships
ebb and flow with the tide,
and sail far away where the sea meets the sky
down by the docks where the water rolls by.

It's down in the railyard
you'll see the old trains,
just a touch rusted
but sound in their frames,
that's where they're waiting, old but still game.
Down in the railyard you'll see the old trains.

It's down in the gutter
you'll see the old men
tossed like old clutter.
There was a time when --
but they're not game no more, and they won't sail again.
It's down in the gutter you'll see the old men.

A fitting commentary. We venerate the old when it is of our making - but never the old of our own kind.
