farewell, SCC

May 18th, 2009 (10:47 pm)

So, SCC was cancelled.

I think I speak for a lot of people when I say, "Bummer."

It wasn't a great show. But it was starting to be really consistently good, with occasional bursts of excellence. That's the shame of it; if SCC had been deep-sixed after first season -- hell, after the pilot -- I wouldn't have minded. But it started to get better; more than that, it started to get *different.* Not only did the show start frequently firing on all cylinders, but even its failures were interesting, and it began to get to the point where I really wanted to see what the show would do next. Alas, I won't get to find out. Nor will I get the spin-off about Weaver, Savannah, Ellison, and John Henry.

Some more thoughts in my piece at Strange Horizons, written before the news came down. I will say that it's a shame that the show goes off the air just as the fandom is coalescing. Maybe we ought to have a valedictory fic-off, or something.

Meanwhile, FOX brought back the execrable DOLLHOUSE, which has thus far been largely a spectacular failure by Whedon et al. We'll see if it gets better season two. I'm doubtful, but then I'd written off SCC at this point last year.

Dollhouse is no Firefly, but it's better than Angel, at least. Of course, I didn't keep watching Angel after the first season or so, except for crossovers with Buffy.

One thing I'll say about Dollhouse is that it achieved something I never would have thought a television show could.

Specifically, it got me to root for the immediate cancellation of a Joss Whedon show.

I have two friends who are very big on "Dollhouse." After having read your take on it, this sort of surprised me - I haven't yet asked their reasons for liking it, but I suppose I should.

Sorry to hear about SCC. I definitely want to see it on DVD at some point, because it sounds really interesting.

Yeah, I'm with you. I'd have much rather seen SCC continue than Dollhouse. From what I read, at least part of that was because Fox owns Dollhouse and SCC was Warner Bros'. Whatever, it's disappointing, SCC was much more interesting than Dollhouse has managed to be.

I didn't watch SCC much in its second season. Wanted to but there were scheduling conflicts. Early in the season it was on opposite Chuck and Monday Night Football. We could only watch one and record one. SCC lost out.

Wow, that's a very good review! You've identified and explained several things that I've been kind of murkily working through in my head for awhile. It will be interesting to see what Friedman and Company's plans for the third season were.
