Brief news round-up, mainly on Africa

  • I only have one word to say about this: good.

  • A great New Yorker article by Lawrence Wright: "The Terror Web."

  • The Sudan is still a horror, and nobody seems inclined to do anything yet. Meanwhile, the latest grotesquerie from the Arab League is that body's full backing of Sudan in its ethnic cleansing of mainly Muslim blacks by Muslim Arab militias -- ethnic cleansing, incidentally, with attendant musical accompaniment:
During an attack on the village of Disa in June last year, Arab women accompanied the attackers and sang songs praising the government and scorning the black villagers.

According to an African chief quoted in the report, the singers said: "The blood of the blacks runs like water, we take their goods and we chase them from our area and our cattle will be in their land. The power of [Sudanese president Omer Hassan] al-Bashir belongs to the Arabs and we will kill you until the end, you blacks, we have killed your God."
The new Sudanese spin, echoed around the Arab world, is that the attention to the Sudanese atrocities -- and the "unrest" in Darfur that the noble Sudanese government is trying diligently to calm down -- is being drummed up by the West to manufacture an intervention there. And who, ultimately, is to blame? Well, who else? The Jews!
