a very angry owl

October 9th, 2009 (05:51 pm)

I present, for your edification, a very angry owl.

I have never seen anything even approximating that much hate on an animal's face. Well, not since the time I bathed a possum, anyway.

(Helpful tip: POSSUMS DO NOT LIKE BATHING. You know how much cats like it? Possums like it EVEN LESS.)

The second to last shot of that owl was just made for macros.

Do I want to ask why you were bathing a possum?

And this is a very happy parrot.

When I was thirteen, I was a junior curator at the Natural Science Center in Greensboro, NC. The place had a petting zoo, and one of the critters in it was an ill-tempered opossum.

I do not remember the critter's name (I recall the groundhogs Melvin and Bernard, and the skunk Flower), but he had never reconciled himself to being in a petting zoo. This did not present much in the way of difficulty when people asked to inspect him, because his cage was not high enough for him to practice hanging from his tail, and so his tail muscles were weak. This meant that on the occasions that he decided mid-petting session that he really didn't want to be in a petting zoo any more, all you had to do was dangle him by his tail, let the public have a couple more skritches to remind him who was boss while he slowly revolved and hissed at them, and put him back in his cage, where he would glare at you grumpily until mealtime, when he'd invariably decide this wasn't such a bad gig after all and indicate that he wouldn't mind being skritched behind the ears.

Sometimes we had to bathe him.

I have a little trouble picturing a possum in a petting zoo. Nasty ill-tempered little things, every one I've ever seen.

The first picture of the owl in the box is going to give me nightmares.

No kiddin'. It invites horrible image macros.

I'm amazed they didn't find the bodies of the rescuers lying beside the road after the owl stole their car.

Y'know, that first picture of Angry Owl does sort of look like the patented Sarah T. glare.

excused from saving universes

Probably not intended, but the Owlish Deathglare of Doom is so very cute! Awww! It's so angry! And it's in a box! *melts*
