I'm in the market for a cell phone, and have never owned one before.

Letstalk.com makes comparison really easy. Just try to get local advice for what gets good service.

I have a pretty good deal through my local phone company - decent service, free phone (pretty basic, but I have simple needs ;), discount on the provider's normal rates, and one bill for both services. You might check out your local company's web site and see what they offer.

I just this very day bought a tracfone -- a Nokia model 2285 with 60 units of talk time included (60 minutes local talk time / 30 minutes roaming), prepaid, no contract, no activation fee, less than $75 at Radio Shack including sales tax. You can get even better deals via their website, by opting for a phone / plan they're promoting and/or buying a refurbished rather than brand-new phone. I can't speak to the customer service, as I haven't had to deal with that yet, but as prepaid cellphone plans go this one seems like a dandy deal. It may not fit your needs, though -- I got mine mainly for 'emergency' use and won't use actual airtime much.
